Welcome to Field Marks
In the world of natural history, field marks are the small but telling details that help you identify a bird or plant in the wild. In my writing, I look for the field marks of culture: the rituals, patterns, and objects that reveal a place’s deeper identity.
As a travel writer and photographer, I work the way a naturalist does in the field—watching, listening, waiting. Subscribe now for story-rich, soulful travel writing that explores the quiet intersections of culture, nature, and memory.
What You’ll Find Here
Field Marks is a home for travel stories that slow down, look closer, and listen deeply. Here, I follow the faint threads, weathered textures, and quiet rhythms that define a place—not the version packaged for tourists, but the one alive in memory, gesture, and daily life.
As a subscriber, you can expect:
3-6 posts per month
A mix of narrative essays, photo stories, and sound scapes
Themes exploring the interplay of culture, memory, and innovation; the relationship between people and nature; living traditions and foodways; place-based storytelling; and the subtle traces that landscapes leave on communities.
Interviews with local storytellers, artists, and naturalists
Occasional book or film reviews tied to place and theme
All rooted in curiosity, care, and connection
I don’t write listicles or “best of” travel guides—I write to feel more connected to the world, and to invite you to do the same.
Why Subscribe?
If you’re a traveler at heart—even when you’re standing still—Field Marks is for you.
If you’re hungry for stories that honor place, nuance, and lived history—you’ll feel at home here.
If you believe travel should leave you changed, not just entertained—this space was made with you in mind.
About Me
I’m Laurie Forrest Moy, a writer, photographer, and certified Master Naturalist. I’ve spent more than 30 years working in media, international development, and global press freedom, helping elevate voices that often go unheard.
Now, I bring that same care and attentiveness to travel writing for fellow wanderers—people curious about the hidden, the layered, and the in-between. People who care not just where they are, but what it means to be there.
Why Now?
The world is moving fast, and so much of travel has become transactional.
Field Marks is a counterpoint—an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and ask better questions.
I believe stories can be bridges. This is my way of building them.
Free vs. Paid
Right now, all posts are free to read and share.
If you’d like to support my work, you can pledge a paid subscription to help fund deeper reporting, travel costs, and the time it takes to craft meaningful stories.
In the future, paid subscribers will receive:
Occasional behind-the-scenes photo essays
Early access to new stories
Travel maps, annotated reading lists, and bonus reflections
Postcards from the places I visit
But for now, your presence here is enough—and always appreciated.
